Tutorial HP Switch – Voice Vlan configuration
First, you need to create a voice VLAN.
A voice VLAN is a VLAN that will be used only for voice traffic.
Open a browser software, enter the IP address of your Switch and access the HP Switch web interface.
On the prompt screen, enter the administrative login information.
Factory default access information:
• Username: admin
• Password: (no password)
After a successful login, the administrative menu will be displayed.
Access the Network menu, and select the VLAN option.
On the VLAN screen, select the Create tab on the top of the screen.
To create a new VLAN, enter the desired identification number and click on the Create button.
In our example, the following VLANS were created: 7, 100, 500 and 999.
In our example, the VLAN 100 will be used as the voice VLAN.
The VLAN 1 already exists by default on an HP Switch.
In our example, the VLAN 1 will be used as the data VLAN.
Tutorial HP Switch – Trunk Configuration
The VoIP phone is connected to the switch.
Your computer is connected to the ethernet port of the VoIP phone.
The switch port should allow the communication of 2 VLANS on a single port.
In order to allow 2 VLANS to pass on a switch port, you need to configure a trunk.
On the VLAN screen, select the Modify Port tab on the top of the screen.
To configure a switch port as a trunk, you will need to:
• Select the desired port.
• Select the Link Type option.
• Select the Trunk mode.
In our example, we configured the switch port 10 in trunk mode.
After configuring the switch port as a trunk, you need to configure the default VLAN.
To configure the default VLAN you need to:
• Select the desired port.
• Select the untagged membership type.
• Enter the ID of the desired VLAN
In our example, we configured VLAN 1 as the default VLAN to this trunk.
Every time this switch port receives a packet without any VLAN identification it will assume that the packet belongs to the default VLAN 1.
Now, only packets from VLAN 1 are authorized to use this trunk.
Access the Network menu and click on the Voice VLAN option.
Access the Setup tab and disable the option named: Voice VLAN Security.
Access the Port setup tab and perform the following configuration.
• Select the Voice VLAN trunk port.
• Voice VLAN port mode: Auto
• Voice VLAN port state: Enable
• Voice VLAN ID: 100
In our example, the switch port 10 is now allowing VLAN 100 to use the trunk.
Now, only packets from VLAN 1 and VLAN 100 are authorized to use this trunk.
Data packets should use VLAN1.
Voice packets should use VLAN100.
You can now set you VoIP phone manually to use VLAN 100 to voice and VLAN 1 to data.
If you want your phone to perform the VLAN configuration automatically read the next section.
Tutorial – Automatic Voice VLAN configuration
This will only work if your VoIP phone supports the LLDP or the CDP protocol.
First, you need to enable the LLDP or the CDP support on your VoIP phone.
Next, we need to enable the LLDP and CDP support on the HP Switch.
Access the Network menu, and select the LLDP option.
Access the Global tab and enable the use of the LLDP and CDP protocols.
This tutorial assumes that all VoIP phones are from the same manufacturer.
Now, you need to find out the MAC address of your phone.
In our example, the Polycom VoIP phone has the following MAC address: 0004-f24e-21b9
Next, we need to configure the HP switch to automatically assign every Polycom phone to the Voice VLAN.
Access the Network menu and click on the Voice VLAN option.
Access the OUI tab and add the first half of the MAC address of your phone.
Every phone which the MAC address starts with 0004-f2 will automatically be assigned to the VoIP VLAN 100.
The data traffic will use the VLAN 1.
The voice traffic will use the VLAN 100.
Don’t forget to save your configuration.
